You Will Never Get Everything Done

Writer's picture: Nadia Ballantine & Carol LynchNadia Ballantine & Carol Lynch

The title is so true, yet we persist in trying to turn up as though it is not. What is with that?

This blog post is about encouraging some mindsets and ways of thinking that will support you to lead through term 4 rather than just survive.

Concept 1: Don’t believe everything you think.

Understand: Your point of view is only a view from a point.

Know: Identify what you can and can’t control.

Do: Coach

'Help me understand…'

'I’m interested in your thoughts about…'

Concept 2: Stop being a human-doing and be a human-being

Understand: Connecting with people and being present is the real work. It is powerful for ourselves and our people.

Know: Establish boundaries and priorities.

Do: Close some of your brain tabs.

Ask-'What is the first step?'

Ask-'How urgent or important is this for you right now?'

Say 'yes' more slowly.

Concept 3: What is important, must be returned to again and again.

Understand: It’s more effective to do less better.

Know: Going deeper requires subtracting rather than adding.

Do: Reflect

'How can we deliberate in keeping the main thing, the main thing?'

'Is this a priority for us right now?'

'How does this link with our key focus area?'

'What difference will this make?'

Tūngia te ururua kia tupu whakaritorito te tupu o te harakeke.

Set the overgrown bush alight, and the new flax shoots will spring up.

Brougham, Reed & Karetu, 1987 p. 67

We hope you have had a refreshing break and are ready to thrive in term 4.

Ngā mihi

Carol & Nadia
