“Your Team Can Only Improve The Things They Talk About”

Well done - you’ve successfully made it halfway through term 1 2023.

Some noticings we’ve made:

-leaders are really wanting to focus on teaching and learning. There is positive urgency about this.

-leaders are exploring ways to adjust the ‘care for people and care for performance’ equation.

-we’ve got an opportunity to do some things differently. Leaders are pondering how they can be brave and courageous and where the space for innovation lies.

We’re wondering if a starting point is – ‘your team can only improve the things they talk about’. We’ve got three ideas about how some of this could look and sound.

Idea One - Self-Reflection

List what you do talk about in your team

List what you want to talk about in your team

Compare and contrast

How can you get from what you currently talk about, to what you want to talk about?

Identify actions

Idea Two - Shaping The Talk

The difference between hearing and listening is… action!

This could include:

-Paraphrasing and summarising; “I’m hearing…”

-Clear next steps; By…we will… so that…

-Focused questioning-‘How might you adapt your practice?’ ‘What changes might you make?’ ‘How will you know you’ve made an impact?’

Idea Three - Monitoring

Seeing resistance, challenges, and problems as learning opportunities.

Leaders must work with people and through people.

Regular monitoring (check-ins, not check-ups - what’s the difference?) provides the opportunity for leaders to encourage and praise staff mahi. It also provides the opportunity for identifying problems and challenges and working with teachers to overcome them.

What looks like resistance is often fear. We don’t need to be fearful of the disruption within education. We can see this as an opportunity for innovation and improvement.
